What is Tajweed?

Tajweed means to...

• recite the Quran in a nice voice

• recite the Quran with the right pronunciation

• recite Quran by applying the rules and pronouncing the letters correctly with its qualities

How did the rules of tajweed come about?

• The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught them to his companions

• The companions watched the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recite the Quran and made notes

• The angels revealed it to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

• The scholars watched how the recitation of the perfect reciters of the Quran, who were taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and made notes

Why did tajweed rules come about?

• To preserve the way in which the Quran was recited by the Prophet (sallahualayhiwasalam)

• To preserve the writings of the Quran

• So the Quran sounds nice

When were tajweed rules written down?

• When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited to his companions

• When the angel taught the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

• After the death of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when Islam started spreading to non Arab lands

Is Arabic spoken the same way it used to be in the time of the Prophet?

Why DIDN'T the Arabs have to learn tajweed at the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?

• Because they heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting, so they didn't need it

• They didn't get a chance.

• They didn't need to as they naturally already applied the rules of tajweed when they used the language. It was already known to them.

Why is tajweed important?

• To protect the message of the Quran - as pronouncing something wrong can change the meaning.

• It makes you sound good

• To preserve the way in which the Quran was recited when it came to the Prophet ﷺ
