RL.8.6 Dramatic Irony

When the reader knows something that a character does not, the dramatic irony can create an effect on the audience's emotions such as

• Humor or Suspense

• Anger or Irony

• Irony or Sympathy

• Drama or irony

What is Dramatic Irony

• When one thing is expected and the opposite happens

• When a character believes something to be true but we, the audience, know the real truth

• When one thing is said but the opposite is meant

• Sarcasm

How does this photo show dramatic irony?

• The girl believes she is safely swimming but the audience knows she's in danger of being attacked by a shark.

• The shark doesn't know it's about to run into a swimmer and the audience doesn't know what will happen next

• The girl doesn't know there is a shark below her and the audience knows what happened right before this scene

Looking at her son's messy room, Mom says, "Wow, you could win an award for cleanliness!"
