We use the present continuous for future when.....

• we intend to do something or have decided to do something but did not arrange it
• we say what we have arranged to do at a specific time in the future. 
• it is just an intention.
• we make predictions

We use "be going to" when....

• we talk about fixed plans with definite time and/or place.
• we describe something happening in the future
• we talk about future intentions that have been decided but have not been fully planned
• we talk about future arrangements
