During the next 20 years, the number of professional haunted houses grew. Larry Kirchner is the president of the Haunted House Association. People who run haunted houses belong to the group. Kirchner says there were about 2,700 haunted houses last year. A large haunted house can make $3 million during Halloween. All together, these businesses make $300 million, according to an NBC news report.
The haunted house become famous in 1969. That year, Disneyland opened its Haunted Mansion. It was a big success. In a single day after it opened, more than 82,000 people passed through it.
