• This shows that Curley's wife wears a lot of make-up and likes to dress herself up to look smart on the ranch. 
• The use of adjectives and similes are used so that the reader can create a really strong image of Curley's wife in their head. It helps the reader to understand the character. 
• The connotations of 'red' show the conflict and contrast within Curley's wife's character. She is both passionate and innocent, dangerous and sexualised. She is almost seen as a piece of meat by some of the men on the ranch.
