What is a symbol? Now that we've seen some real-world examples of symbols, write your best definition.

10

Symbol

A symbol is an object that stands for a deeper meaning. Unlike a metaphor, which compares two unlike things, a symbol stands in the place of whatever is being symbolized. Symbols don't have to stand for just objects, but could represent deeper ideas and cultural meanings.

There are things to keep in mind when looking for symbols; they can be pretty tricky to find. Look for concrete objects that could stand for something bigger, and might have a personal or cultural significance. Sometimes, symbols mean different things to different people.

Also, think about whether an author is placing a certain emphasis on something small, because it usually leads to a bigger meaning or idea.

For example, Harvey Dent's (Two-Face from Batman) two-headed coin is symbolic of the struggle between good and evil within him.

Finally, realize that it is not necessarily physical, small objects that can have deeper symbolic meanings. Colors can have symbolic meanings, as well as larger entities such as the sea, the moon, and the earth.
