Good writers use sensory details.

​EXAMPLE: I sat on the sofa.

I sank down onto the worn, threadbare sofa, burying my face in its faded fabric, where I could very faintly smell yesterday’s dinner, and the dog, and my brother’s cologne . . . all mingling together into a single scent called home.
