Convert plural compound nouns to
singular

  • Plural compound nouns are formed by the addition of "s" or "es" to the principal word or noun.

  • Therefore making plural compound nouns singular simply involves the removal of "s" or "es" from the nouns.

  • Examples:

    Sunflowers x---> Sunflower
    Lunchbox
    es x ---> Lunchbox

Irregularities in Plural Noun Forms

  • There are multiple nouns in English that do not follow the rule of "s" or "es" in plural.

  • In such cases, they form plurals with other additions like "ves", "ies", "en", "i", "a", and much more.

  • While turning such nouns to their singular forms, removing these endings and replacing the omitted letters like "y", "um", "f", is essential.

  • Examples:
    G
    eese x ---> Goose
    Dat
    a x ---> Datum

8

  • When such irregular nouns combine with other words to form compound nouns, the same rules of irregularity applies to the compound word as well.

  • The word that is pluralized is changed to singular, keeping the other word untouched.

  • Butterflies x ---> Butterfly
    Policem
    en x ---> Policeman
