Unit Fractions:

Unit = One

A unit fraction identifies how much one part of the whole equals. The numerator is always one, and the denominator is the total number of parts.

"A unit fraction, always has a 1 in the numerator!"

What is the unit fraction of the donut above?

3

Identifying the Fraction From a Picture:

  • Count the number of parts you are talking about (look at the question to know if you are looking at the number of parts shaded or not shaded). This number is your numerator.

  • The total number of parts in ONE whole is your denominator. No matter how many wholes you have, your denominator is just the numbers of parts in ONE of them.

There are 9 pieces shaded so that is our numerator.

There are 6 pieces in one whole. So that is our denominator.

The fraction shaded is 9/6

5

What does equivalent mean?

If something is equivalent, it is equal or the same.

Equivalent fractions have some rules:

two fractions are equal if they are the same size, based on the same whole, or at the same point on a number line.

media

6

To determine if two fractions are equivalent, I check to make sure each whole is the same size, then I look at the part that is being compared.

If the shaded part takes up the same space, the fractions are equivalent.

If we set our number lines on top of each other we can look to see if each fraction takes up the same length on the number line.

Fractions on a Number Line:

  1. Draw your box.

  2. Label unit fractions.

  3. Shade if there is a point your are counting to.
