Greek and Latin Roots:
Vis-, Manu,- and Ped-

In English, we have 3 kinds of affixes, or word parts:
Prefixes come before a root
Roots come either in the beginning of a word (if there is no prefix) or in the middle of a word
Suffixes follow a root

English takes affixes from Greek and Latin
When we recognize those affixes, we can figure out the meanings of difficult new words.

The root 'vis-'
comes from Latin
means 'to see' or 'sight'
is used in words like vision, invisible, and video

The root 'manu-'
comes from Latin
means 'hand'
is used in words like manual, manuscript, and manufacture

The root 'ped-'
comes from Latin
means 'foot'
is used in words like pedal, expedition, and pedestrian
very similar to the Greek pod-, as in podiatrist (doctor who studies feet)
