Stopping the markers

by E.L. Summers

3

What are the markers

These are the letters that can make other letters change their sound.

  • E

  • I

  • Sometimes Y

4

Markers in Action

We often use the letter E to make a vowel in the word "say its name"

This is the word rat. The a is short, it says the /a/ sound.

This is the word rate. The a is now long. Adding the e (the marker) means that we say the long sound of the previous vowel we saw in the word.

5

Markers in Action

The letter i can do the same thing as the e sometimes.

This is tap.

This is taping, like you are taping up a present.

The i that we added is now making the first a "say its name".

6

Stopping the marker

If we didn't want to write "taping" but meant to write the word that someone is making the "tap" sound over and over, then we have to stop the i from making the a say its name.

Instead of taping we would write tapping

7

Stopping the marker

There are different ways to stop the markers so they don't make other letters change what they say.

One way do do this is by doubling consonants. Remember that consonants are all the letters that are not vowels.
