The United Nations and the UDHR
How Universal Rights Emerged & Have Developed
2
The United Nations
Created on October 25th, 1945
As World War II was about to end in 1945, nations were in ruins, and the world
wanted peace.
Representatives of 50 countries gathered at the United Nations Conference on
International Organization in San Francisco, California from 25 April to 26 June
1945.
In two months they drafted and then signed the UN Charter, which created a new
international organization, the United Nations, which, it was hoped, would prevent
another world war like the one they had just lived through.
3
Multiple Choice
Why did fifty nations come together to create the United Nations in 1945?
To create a world government that would fight to protect human rights.
To create a place where countries could meet, talk and avoid another world war.
To help western countries impose their culture and will on non-western countries.
None of these answers reflects why the UN was created.
4
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Formalized on December 10, 1948
in response to the “barbarous acts which outraged
the conscience of mankind” during the Second
World War.
Its adoption recognized human rights to be the
foundation for freedom, justice and peace in the world.
48 countries voted for Declaration and 8 did not vote
(BUT DID NOT VOTE AGAINST).
