When finding the length of an object your not only measuring, you are finding the pieces to a formula that may help you later,

Length

In order to find the area of a shape you must first know how to find the length as well as the width, if you can't measure the length correctly you won't be able to find the area of the shape.

Real World Application:

There are many ways you will need to use these skills in your daily life. Firstly if you ever decide to buy furniture or something large you'll need to measure those items to make sure they will fit in your home. Next say you buy a new puppy and need to build a fence for your backyard. You'll need to know the area of the backyard to know how much fencing material you will need. Lastly say you want to buy a fish tank and you need to know how much water to fill it with. Know the volume of the fish take will help you with that!
