What is “Project Based Learning”?

“Project based learning” is a way of
teaching where students focus on
solving a problem as a way to
learn.

With PBL’s, we use driving questions
to lead us to our main problem. Then,
our lessons are focused on solving
that problem.

Here are Some
Examples:

A science class is learning about ecology.
For their PBL, they create a 15 minute
documentary that explains environmental
problems in their community and possible
solutions.

A theater class is learning about comedy.
They decide to write and perform a
two-act comedy play.

A debate class is learning about the
Lincoln-Douglas style of debating. They
hold a town hall debate for their school
where they discuss cell phone use.

8 Elements Explained

Driving Question: an open-ended,
engaging, and carefully crafted question that

must find out in order to solve their problem

independence that is given to students as
they work. Students are given a bit of control
to respond to the problem

Significant Content: as students research,
they must focus on content that is relevant
and credible

project, students must be able to analyze
their work and revise to make necessary
changes

21st Century Skills: integrating current
skills into the work–i.e. researching skills
and technology

the public

business is

Products & Services: what you
are selling

explanation of the current
economy and how your business
