2

I can make a prediction by using the equation of a line that closely fits a set of data.

media

Essential Question: How do linear models helps you make a prediction?

3

Definitions:

Slope: The slope, or constant rate of change, is the “steepness” of a line that is often known as the “rise over run”. We can find the slope by finding the change in the y axis over (divided by) the change in the x axis. Slope is often represented by the variable “m”.

Y-Intercept: The y-intercept, or initial value, is the point on the line that crosses the y-axis. The y-intercept will be written as a coordinate (0,y) where y is the y coordinate that passes the through the y-axis. The y-intercept is represented by the variable “b”.

Slope Intercept Form: Slope Intercept Form is a formula,

Y = mx + b

Explanation

Step 1: Use the slope to make a prediction

Step 2: Use the scatter plot to make a prediction.
Step 3: Use the trendline to interpret the slope and y-intercept.

Question image

This line has slope - 45\frac{4}{5}   and y intercept of 3. What is the equation of the line?

1

45= 3x + b-\frac{4}{5}=\ 3x\ +\ b

2

y = 45x + 3y\ =\ -\frac{4}{5}x\ +\ 3

3

y = 3x  45y\ =\ 3x\ -\ \frac{4}{5}

4

3 = mx  453\ =\ mx\ -\ \frac{4}{5}

Conclusion: In your notes, Write two complete sentences about what you learned.
