What are verbs?

Verbs describe actions, whether physical or mental.

  • These words also describe a state of being.

  • Every sentence needs at least one verb.


For example:

ran across the field, kicked the ball,
and scored a goal.

Main Verbs

Main verbs show the action or state of being in a sentence.

For example:

  • She goes for a run every morning.

  • The dog barks loudly.

  • The team played soccer yesterday.

  • Adam is driving a new car.

Helping Verbs

Helping verbs assist the main verb in a sentence.

For example:

  • Carol is studying for her test.

  • Did you do your chores?

  • They had a great time at the party.

  • You should eat your vegetables every day.

  • They have been working all day.
