Nouns- Overview

  • A word for a person, place, thing, or idea

  • Nouns can be proper or common. Proper nouns are always capitalized. Common nouns are not.

  • Nouns can be singular or plural.

  • Nouns can be concrete or abstract.

  • Nouns can be compound.

  • Nouns can be collective.

Nouns- Common or proper

  • Common nouns name any person, place, thing, or idea. They are general. 

  • Examples- school, shoes, city, restaurant

  • Proper nouns name a particular person, place, thing, or idea. They are specific. They are always capitalized.

  • Examples- I.C. Norcom, Nike, Portsmouth, Abuelo's

Pronouns- Overview

  • A pronoun is a word that takes the place of one or more nouns. 

  • There are many different types of pronouns. We'll focus on Personal and Indefinite.

  • The antecedent is the word, phrase, or clause that a pronoun replaces. 

  • Example- The driver forgot to turn on his headlights. 
    driver = antecedent, his = pronoun

  • Personal pronouns are the most common kind of pronoun and can be divided into three groups: first person, second person, and third person.

  • First person- I, me, we, us

  • Second person- you

  • Third person- she, her, he, him, it, they, them

  • Main Verbs are action verbs or linking verbs.

  • Action verbs- express action

  • Examples- run, write, describe, exaggerate

  • Linking verbs link the subject to information concerning its state of being.

  • Examples- Mya is tired. My cats are happy. The test is an Algebra test. Devon turned green while riding the roller coaster. Marcus is the quarterback.

  • An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun.
