Dirt Candy

“Let’s go get some dirt candy,” Mom said.

Cal laughed. He wondered what dirt candy

could be.

Cal followed Mom out to the garden, where

she showed him some small green plants. “If

we pull these out of the ground, we will find

some dirt candy,” Mom said.

Dirt Candy

Cal pulled on the green plants, and out of the

ground came orange carrots covered in dirt.

Cal and Mom cleaned off the carrots, showing

more of their bright orange color.

When he took a bite of the sweet crunchy vegetable, Cal smiled. Carrots really were like candy that grew in the dirt.

Dirt Candy

Mom and Cal went back out to the garden to

see what else was ripe and ready for picking.

“Look at these lovely little tomatoes,” Mom

said. She pointed at a tomato plant that was

full of small tomatoes. Some were ready to eat

because they were ripe and red. Others were

yellow, almost ripe, and a few were still hard

and green.

Dirt Candy

Cal thought they looked like stoplights. He

picked a small red tomato and put it into his

mouth. When he bit down, a sweet juice filled

his mouth. “These stoplights taste good!”

he said.

Cal and Mom made a yummy salad with their

dirt candy and sweet stoplights.
