What are the words that will come up in your mind about the word "research"?

5

Definition of Research According to Different Authors

  • ‘Research is a systematic process of discovery and advancement of human knowledge’ (Gratton & Jones, 2009, p.4).

  • According to Theodorson and Theodorson (1969) it refers to any honest attempt to study a problem systematically or to add to man’s knowledge of a problem.

  • According to Saunders et al. (2007) research is something that people undertake to find out things in a systematic way, thereby increasing their knowledge.

  • It primarily focuses upon improving quality and is a search for knowledge (Kapur, 2018).

6

Collective Definition

"Research is a systematic way to answer a question or find a solution to a problem, contributing to the body of knowledge."

7

The Research Process

  1. Research starts with a question or a problem.

  2. Researchers first find out what others have already learned about the subject.

  3. If the question has not been fully answered, they figure out a way to get more data or information.

  4. They may do further observations or perform an experiment to test their idea.

8

The Research Process

  1. Next, they analyze the data (information) they have collected.

  2. Then they publish their procedures, data, and conclusions. This allows other scientists to repeat the experiments and double-check the conclusions.

9

Multiple Choice

What is the initial step in the research process?

1

Collecting data

2

Analyzing data

3

Posing a question or problem

4

Publishing conclusions

10

Multiple Choice

What do researchers do after they have identified a question or problem?

1

Seek answers from others

2

Analyze data

3

Perform expirements

4

Publish their procedures

11

Multiple Choice

When a question has not been fully answered, what do researchers do?

1

Conclude the research

2

Seek a different question

3

Publish their initial findings

4

Collect more data or information

12

Multiple Choice

What is one of the methods researchers use to gather additional data or information?

Analyzing the data

3

Seeking help from others

4

Publishing conclusions

14

Multiple Choice

What is the primary purpose of publishing procedures, data, and conclusions in research?

1

To show off their work to others

2

To brag about their accomplishments

3

To enable other scientists to replicate experiments and verify conclusions

4

To gain personal recognition

15

Multiple Choice

What do researchers do to ensure the validity of their findings in the research process?

16

Multiple Choice

In the research process, what is the main purpose of analyzing data?

1

To identify patterns and draw conclusions

2

To hide the findings from others

3

To make the research process more complex

4

To prevent others from understanding the research

17

Multiple Choice

Why is it important for researchers to find out what others have already learned about a subject before conducting their own research?

1

To make their research seem more impressive

2

To build on existing knowledge and avoid redundancy

3

To avoid doing any research

4

To discredit the work of other researchers

18
