What is Point of View?

Point of view refers to the way the author tells the story

There are three types of point of view:

• ​First person

• Second person

• Third person​

• The narrator is a character in the story

• They use words like, I, me, and my

• ​They reveal their thoughts and feelings but do not know the thoughts and feelings of the other characters.

• The reader is being addressed directly

• ​Second person isn't as common.

• The narrator is not a character in the story.

• ​There are three types of third person point of view: objective, limited, and omniscient

Third Person POV

• Third person- objective: narrator is an outsider who can only report what they see and hear; doesn't know the thoughts and feelings of any of the characters

• Third person-limited: outside narrator who knows the thoughts and feelings of only one of the characters (in some longer works, might switch back and forth between character perspectives)

• Third person-omniscient: an all-knowing narrator who knows the thoughts and feelings of a​ll of the characters
