THE SEMICOLON

;

-Use a semicolon to join independent clauses that are not already connected with a comma and a coordinating conjunction such as and, but, so or or.
-When a semicolon is used to join independent clauses, the clauses must be closely related in thought.
-Use a semicolon to join two independent clauses with a conjun ctive adverb, such as however. A comma must follow the conjunctive adverb.
-Use a semicolon to join two independent clauses with a transition word or phrase, such as for example. A comma must follow the transition phrase.
-Use a semicolon to separate items in a series when one or more of the items already contains commas
