"Catch the Moon" is a short story from the Ortiz's An Island Like You: Stories of the Barrio (1995).

  • Born in 1952 in Puerto Rico, Ortiz moved to New Jersey four years later. Her family traveled back and forth to Puerto Rico.

  • Often writes about the experiences of young people trying to forge their identifies while straddling two or more cultures.

  • Writes based on her own experience growing up in the United States and struggling both to assimilate to American culture and honoring the traditions and values of parents who were born and raised elsewhere.
