The purpose is.....
The purpose of any business is to make money. If you can make more money than it costs to run the business, it's called profit. The music publishing and recording industries are like any other business in America: They are trying to make a profit. The music business is a multibillion dollar industry that has evolved to be an efficient moneymaking machine.

What is the process?
1) Identify an artist as having profit potential
-can come from performing sucess or A&R (Artist and Repertoire)
-most record labels do not accept submissions of recordings from unknown and unproven artists.
2) Once under contract, they word to produce a saleable product.
-this includes songwriters, arrangers, producers, engineers

There are three large companies that are responsible for the majority of music that is recorded and sold. Over the years, these three have purchased many smaller companies and gained control of their labels and artists.

With the introduction of sophisticated copy machines and the advent of multiple digital audio formats, it has become increasingly easy to copy printed and recorded music.
However, it is illegal according to federal copyright law, and there are some good reasons behind this legislation.

Music and Television
In 1948, the CBS television network hired Ed Sullivan to host a weekly variety show called Toast of the Town. In 1955, this show became The Ed Sullivan Show and was broadcast from CBS Studio 50 on Broadway in New York City. This theater is now home to the Late Show with David Letterman. The Ed Sullivan Show aired on Sunday evenings for 23 years.
