Plants and Animal Cells
2
Chloroplasts give plants their green color
Plant cells are all rectangular and animal cells are circular
Plant and Animal Cells
3
Parts of Animal and Plant Cells
Cell Membrane found in all cells and seperate the inside of the cell from the outside enviroment. The cell membrane is like a filter and allows some materials in and out of the cell
Cell Wall is a structural layer surrounding plant cells, just on the outside of the cell cell membrane
Nucleus is found in BOTH plant and animal cells
Chloroplasts is a type of membrane - bound organelle that conducts photosynthesis
Cytoplasm is a jelly- like liquid that fills the inside of a cell and helps to hold the organelles in place.
4
What is Special about Plant Cells?
..................... drum roll
Plant Cells have cell walls and chloroplasts
Chloroplasts provides plants a way to capture the sun's energy and begin the conversion process to a usable form of energy (photosynthesis)
The Cell Wall provides plants with structure and protection & allows to grow up to the sun, protects against disease (pathogen)
5
Plants and animals are comprised of cells too small to be seen without the help of technology.
Magnify & Hands Lens?
6
Multiple Choice
Nina is creating a model of a plant cell and an animal cell. She is drawing a diagram of both cells and labeling the structures. Which structures should Nina only add to the plant cell?
nucleus
cell membrane
cytoplasm
chloroplast
7
Physical and Chemical Changes
How can you tell which one is happening? EVIDENCE, EVIDENCE, EVIDENCE
8
The chemical properties in the new substance formed are different from the original chemical properties
Chemical Changes
There is a change in the size, shape, or color BUT no change in the chemical properties
Physical Changes
Mixtures, Evidence
9
Multiple Choice
Salt and sugar are poured into a glass of water and stirred. Slowly, the salt and sugar crystals become harder to see and then cannot be seen at all. What happened to the salt and sugar?
They dissolved into the water, forming a mixture.
They evaporated from the water, forming a solid.
They reacted with the water, forming a compound.
They combined with the water, forming an element.
10
Classification of Animals
11
Animals can be broken down into invertebrates and vertebrates.
Animals
Invertebrates have no backbone. These are jellyfish, spiders, grasshoppers, snails, sea stars, and sponges
Invertebrate
Vertebrates are those animals that have a backbone.
Vertebrate
Vertebrates are further broken down into classes: Mammals, Birds, Amphibians, Reptiles, Fish
Vert. Groups
12
Has fur or hair; warm blooded, produce milk to feed their young, external ears. Some examples are humans, cows, and horses.
Mammals
Has feathers and wings; have beaks and lay eggs; warm blooded. Some examples are swans, eagles, and various types of songbirds.
Birds
13
Has scales on the bodies; have gills for breathing; most are coldblooded. Some examples are tuna, salmon, and goldfish
Fish
Has moist skin; cold blooded, lays eggs in water, born in water- breathe through gills; develop lungs to brethe and live on land. Some examples frogs, newts, salamanders.
Amphibian
Has dry skin; lay eggs on dry land; cold blooded. Some examples are snakes, crocodiles, lizards, and turtles.
Reptile
14
Multiple Choice
A salamander has moist skin and lays eggs. It breathes through lungs or gills, depending on the species. A salamander is which type of animal?
