The Kuwait Towers were officially opened in March 1979, and are regarded as a landmark and symbol of modern Kuwait.

On the 19th of June 1961, Kuwait became independent. The first National Day holiday actually took place on this date in 1962.

The the holiday was moved due to the extreme heat in June. 

From 1963, the National Day was celebrated on the 25th of February, marking the date that Sheikh Abdullah came into power in 1950.
