What point of view is this story being told from? How do you know? (Look for the pronouns)

One day a little girl went home and had a sad look on her face. Her mother was concerned, so she decided to ask her what was going on. "Anna, why do you look so sad?" asked her mother. "I had an argument with my friend at school," replied Anna. Anna's mom wrapped her arms around her daughter and told her she loved her.

OUR GUIDED QUESTION:

Where might we see pronouns that don't effect the point of view?

Based on this passage, where did you see pronouns that did not effect the point of view?

12

Avoiding a common pitfall.

Whatever the characters say within the text does NOT determine the point of view.

13

Multiple Choice

What point of view is this scenario?

The boys were on their way to the park together. Jim turned to Sam and said, "Do you want top play basketball?" Sam jumped up and down with excitement. "Of course I do!" They walked quickly to the court and started dribbling back and forth.

Last, but not least

Once you identify the point of view, you still need to decide who is telling the story.

This objective is more than 1st person and 3rd person point of view. It is about using pronouns AND clues in the text to determine who is telling the story and understanding why that is important. Each character has a particular set of thoughts and feelings, and knowing whose point of view you are reading, helps you understand them better.

15

Time for more practice:

As you answer the following questions, remember to:

A. Identify the pronouns used

B. Look for clues as to who might be talking

C. Don't be distracted by dialogue

D. Take your time. It is not a race.
