1

Ratios, Equivalent Ratios, Comparing Ratios, and Graphing Ratios

In this lesson we will compare ratios., compare unit rates, and graph ordered pairs to compare ratios and rates.

2

Ratios

Ratios are a comparison of two values.

They could compare part to part or part to whole.

We can write ratios 3 different ways:
with the word "to", a colon " : " or as a fraction.

Multiple Select

A sixth grade basketball team has 3 centers, 5 forwards, and 6 guards.

Select 3 ways to write the ratio:

Guards to centers

1

6 : 5

2

6 to 3

3

3 to 6

4

63\frac{6}{3}

5

6 : 3

4

Fill in the Blank

A science classroom has 5 turtles and 7 frogs. What is the ratio of frogs to total animals?

5

Equivalent Ratios

There are an infinite amount of equivalent ratios.

Ratios are equivalent when they show the same relationship or show the same value.

We can use ratio tables to help us generate equivalent ratios.

6

Multiple Select

Select 3 equivalent ratios for the ratio  35\frac{3}{5}

1

610\frac{6}{10}

2

1215\frac{12}{15}

3

915\frac{9}{15}

4

1220\frac{12}{20}

5

612\frac{6}{12}

7

Fill in the Blank

Type in the 3 numbers to complete the table.

Type the number for owls first, and then the 2 numbers for chipmunks.

8

Graphing Ratios

I can create equivalent ratio tables and graph ordered pairs to represent ratios

10

Comparing Ratios

Ratio tables can be used to compare two different ratios.

When comparing, you must look at the two terms that have the same number.

Example: Use the term "6 cups of blue paint" for each person. Then compare the cups of red point to show who uses more.

Multiple Choice

Lila is buying beach balls for her beach themed party. Each package contains 8 beach balls. Generate the set of ordered pairs for the ratio relationship between the number of beach balls y and the number of packages x for a total of 1, 2, 3, and 4 packages. Which ordered pairs are correct?

1

(1,8) , (2,15), (3,34), (4,32)

2

(1,8) , (2,16), (3,24), (4,32)

3

(1,8) , (2,16), (3,22), (4,30)

What are the correct numbers for filling in the ratio tables?

1

Edith: 2, 3, 12, 15

Rashida: 4, 6, 20, 25

2

Edith: 2, 3, 14, 16

Rashida: 4, 6, 25, 30

3

Edith: 3, 2, 12, 15

Rashida: 5, 7, 20, 25

Multiple Choice

Question image

Who has the better ratio of baskets to shots? And why?

1

Edith, because she made 2 baskets out of 6 shots.

2

Rashida, because 2 + 5 = 7 and that is more than Edith's ratio (1 + 3 = 4)

3

Edith, because for every 15 shots she attempts, she makes 6 baskets compared to Rashida's 5 baskets

4

Rashida, because for every 15 shots she attempts, she makes 6 baskets compared to Edith's 5 baskets
