Method

Goal-based management model that aims to improve the performance of an organization by clearly defining objectives and constantly measuring them

​Management by Objectives

(MBO)

Decide what the goal will be for the employee

​​Define Objective

​Monitor employees while they work towards their goal in the set timeline

​​Continuously Monitor Performance

Boss and employee sit down and discuss progress and talk about whether they are on track to meet the goal

​​Provide Feedback

​Boss decides if the employee met the goal when the timeline is over and let the employee know how they did

​​Performance Appraisal

​Benefits of MBO

• Helps employees understand their on-the-job responsibilities and goals

• The supervisors set goals for every member of the team, and every employee is provided with a list of unique tasks.

• Employee's feels valuable to the organization and eventually develop a sense of loyalty to the organization.

• Clear goals, clear objectives, clear evaluations

Examples of an MBO

• Boss tells a sales associate they need to sell 30 cars each quarter

  • If the employee meets or exceeds this goal they get a positive evaluation

• Boss tells a his marketing team that he wants the company to double their following a social media by the end of the year
