constant- the unit rate in a proportional relationship

proportional relationships- two amounts that increase or decrease at the same rate

Some text here about the topic of discussion

3

Multiple Choice

The unit rate in a proportional relationship is the

1

ratio

2

constant

3

proportion

4

fraction

4

Multiple Choice

4

unit rate

5

Properties of Proportional Graphs

  • All graphs of proportional relationships are represented with a straight line to show a constant rate also known as LINEAR.

  • All proportional relationships pass through the origin.

  • Can be used to calculate the unit rate or constant of proportionality.

New Vocabulary

coordinate plane(graph) - a two-dimensional surface formed by two number lines (x-axis and y- axis)

origin- The point (0,0) where the x-axis and y-axis intersect

ordered pair- a pair of numbers (x,y) that identifies the location of a point on the cooridinate plane.

x-coordinate- the first number in the ordered pair. It tells the distance away from the y-axis

y-coordinate- the second number in the ordered pair. It tells the distance away from the x-axis

24

Multiple Choice

Question image

The graph above shows the price of games in dollars. Is the graph proportional and how do you know?

(Click the graph to enlarge the picture.)

1

The graph is proportional because it is a straight line.

2

The graph is proportional because it is a straight line that passes through the origin.

3

The graph is not proportional because it does not pass through the origin.

4

The graph is not proportional because it is not a straight line and it does not pass through the origin.

25

Multiple Choice

Question image

The following graph is not proportional, why is that?

(Click the graph to enlarge the image.)

1

We don't know what number it starts at.

2

It does not pass through the origin.
