Matter and Properties

  • Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.

  • A property is something about matter that you can observe or measure

    • OBSERVABLE properties: color, shape, size, texture, hardness

      • You can use your 5 senses to OBSERVE these properties

    • MEASURABLE properties: mass, volume, length, temperature

      • You need a tool to MEASURE these properties

3

media

Scientists use properties to categorize or separate objects into groups with similar properties. They might make categories of objects that have similar mass or similar sizes or shapes.

Multiple Choice

Jake organized his toys into categories. The first category was red toys that were all square. The second category was blue toys that were round and square. The third category were green toys that were all different sizes. What property did Jake use to sort his toys?

7

Measurable Properties: Mass

  • To measure mass, scientists use either a balance scale or pan balance

  • The unit of measure for mass is grams (g) or kilograms (kg)

  • Mass measures how much matter an object has

  • A scientist will often measure the mass of an object and compare its mass to another object using the words heavier or lighter, more or less mass.

9

Measurable Properties: Temperature

  • The measure of how hot or cold something is

  • Temperature is measured using a thermometer

  • Temperature is measured using degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius, most scientists use Celsius

12

Measurable Properties: Volume

  • The measure of how much space an object takes up

  • Volume is measured using a graduated cylinder

  • Using the water displacement theory, scientists can determine how much space an object takes by determining the starting level of a graduated cylinder, placing the object in, and determining the ending level. The volume is found by finding the DIFFERENCE between the starting and ending level (subtracting)

  • Volume is measured using liters (L) and milliliters (mL)

States of Matter

16

media

Solid - Solids keep their own shape.

Liquid - Liquids take the shape of their container.

Gas - Gases take the shape AND FILL their container.

Solid, Liquid, or Gas

17

When temperature changes (when heat is increased or decreased), the state of matter can change.

INCREASE: more, higher - HOTTER

DECREASE: less, lower - COOLE
