A simple sentence contains one subject and one predicate and forms a complete thought.


It may have a compound subject, a compound predicate, or both.

  • Ex. Kayla had lunch at the museum.

  • Ex. Brian and Zoie read and study books.

A compound sentence contains two or more simple sentences. They are joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction, or by a semicolon.

  • Coordinating conjunctions are FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but or, yet, so)

  • Compound sentences have two complete subjects and two complete predicates.

    • Ex. Darlene took the day off school, but her doctor’s appointment was canceled.

    • Ex. The big dog frightened Lucy, and she ran away in tears.
