Dividing a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number

You can use long division to divide numbers. Follow the steps below to divide a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number. Try it with 649÷19.

Write the problem using the long division symbol.

Start with the digit in the hundreds place. Since 19 does not go into 6, look at the hundreds and tens together. Find how many times 19 goes into 64.

You can use estimation to help. The number 19 is close to 20, and 64 is close to 60. Since 60÷20=3, you can estimate that 19 goes into 64 about 3 times.

Write the 3 above the 4.

Multiply 19×3=57.

Subtract 64–57=7.

There are 7 left over.

Next, bring the 9 down from the ones place to make the number 79. How many times does 19 go into 79? You can use estimation again. The number 19 is close to 20, and 79 is close to 80. Since 80÷20=4, you can estimate that 19 goes into 79 about 4 times.

Write the 4 above the 9.

Multiply 19×4=76.

Subtract 79–76=3.

There are 3 left over.

We have 3 left over. There are no more digits to divide, so 3 is a remainder. That means 19 can't go into 649 evenly. We write it as R3.
