Form

Form can mean two things in music. It can refer to the organization of separate musical ideas into some order. For instance, if someone talked about an ABA form, this would mean that a musical idea was established, then something different was heard, and then the original section returned and was played again.

Composers think about what parts to repeat:

ABA - A is played 2X AABAC - A is played 3X

The Symphony

Large orchestral work

1st movement - often fast (allegro) develops a theme for the piece

2nd movement - may be slower - melody develops

3rd movement - most often very fast

4th movement - finale - brings it all together

Be sure to read the Essentials of Sonata Form - page 3 of 3.4.3
