After the enslaved people in Saint Domingue rose up, they created the nation of Haiti, the world's first independent country founded by former slaves. Toussaint L'Ouverture led the uprising against the French plantation owners. During the French Revolution, under one of the consitutions, slavery had been abolished.

The French captured L'ouverture, but the revolution went on. Eventually Haiti became a free country. BUT they had to fight Britain, Spain, and France! They also had to pay a huge bill $90 million gold francs (today that would be about 21 billion dollars) to compensate the slaveholders. That may be why Haiti is a very poor country today.​
