Vocabulary

  1. SCATTER PLOT- dISPLAYS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWOS SETS OF DATA.

  2. trend line- a line drawn on a scatter plot to show the correlation or association between to sets of data

  3. Line of best fit- Most accurate trend line (on demos)

  4. correlation- Trend or pattern

  5. causation- between two variables; a change in one variable causes the other variable to change

  6. Linear Regression- method used to find the line of best fit (on demos)

THIS SHOULD BE WRITTEN ON YOUR PAPER

3

The axes are labeled, and the data points are "scattered" across the graph. We can use this graph to compare height and weight of the people in this study.

EXAMPLE 1:

HEIGHT VS WEIGHT

4

Correlation means trend or pattern.  What trend or pattern do you see here?  If three people gave you their height, could you make assumptions about their weight?

CORRELATION

5

Causation

between two variables; a change in one variable causes the other variable to change

Examples:

  1. More exercise causes a greater number of calories to be burned

  2. A change in x causes a change in y

  3. a change in y causes a change in x

  1. POSITIVE

    1. strong

    2. weak

  2. NEGATIVE

    1. strong

What kind of correlation did our height vs weight graph show?

1

Positive

2

Negative

3

No Correlation

8

Multiple Choice

Would you say the correlation was strong or weak?

1

Strong

2

Weak

3

No Correlation

9

So, our graph has a weak positive correlation.  In order to have a stronger correlation, we want the dots to be much closer together on the graph, almost a LINE.  The more "line-like" they are, the stronger the correlation.
