Unit 1a: Linear Motion

2

Defining Motion

  • žMotion is defined as a change in position over a period of time

  • žFor each situation, a frame of reference must be in place.

  • žGenerally, the starting position and time are set as the origin

    • Position = 0 meters

    • Time = 0 seconds

Imagine that the images are super-imposed on each other to show the change in position – or, motion!

4

  • Displacement measures your change in position.

  • A vector quantity is a magnitude AND a direction.

  • Directions can be N-S-E-W or +/-

  • A scalar quantity is just a number value or measurement (magnitude)

Distance is a scalar quantity

Distance vs. Displacement

Unit 1a: Velocity

Displacement is a vector quantity

5

  • You can have a negative displacement.

  • A negative displacement indicates backwards or downwards motion.

  • You cannot travel a negative distance!
