Selecting a "just right" tool: allows students to meet their learning goals.

  1. Differentiation- allows teachers to select learning levels for different students. Tool example: Tween Tribune.

2. Focus on Learning Task- allows students to easily focus on the learning goals and not be distracted by other features of the device.

3. Choice- Having options to pursue different interests through the tools to meet their learning goals. Tool example: Storyboard.

Modeling- showing students how to use resources. Model to students how to use tool before students have access to the tool.

  • Guided practice and a Gradual Release of Responsibility – “I do, we do, you do” students first see the teaching modeling before students have device.

  • Software Tour – teachers take students on a “tour” of the software, sharing what they notice, options, visuals, and how they imagine the tool can be used.

  • Teacher Think-Aloud- demonstrate software while talking out loud about what you are doing and why you are making those choices, give reasoning.

  • Self reflection: ask yourself questions, mention what you notice while engaging in the content in order to generate predictions.

  • Read Alouds/ Interactive Share Alouds: participate in groups, build co-constructing ideas and collaborate in software.

  • Visual Representations: create visuals that show understanding of the content. (ex. graphs, maps, drawings, animation, posters).

  • Elicit Prior Knowledge: ​Integrate strategies around digital tools to help students make connections with what they currently know with new knowledge and ideas.

  • Tech-to-Self Connections: Select technology tools that allow students to connect their everyday experiences to the content learning. Allow students to select tools rather than the teacher always selecting for them.​
