Trench Warfare

“You smug faced crowds with kindling eye;

Who cheer when soldier lads march by;

Sneak home and pray you’ll never know;

The Hell where youth and laughter go.”

  • To take an enemy trench soldiers had to assault the trench over No Mans Land- the dead ground between the trench lines, and then engage in brutal hand to hand fighting to take over the trench.

media

63

  • The trenches put the war into a state of stalemate- neither side could push the other back, and neither side had the advantage.
