Your skeletal system’s main purpose it to support your body. Without bones, you wouldn’t be able to move. Bones also help to protect your organs. Your spine is the main support in your body. It is made of twenty-six bones. Your skull protects your brain and your ribs protect your heart and lungs. The pelvis helps to protect the organs in your abdomen.

What are our bones made of?

The bones in your arms and legs are long and strong. There are smaller bones in your hands, wrists, feet, and ankles. Your body has 206 bones and each has a special job. Bones are alive because they are made of living cells. This is how they are able to grow. The spongy material in the middle of your bones is called bone marrow, which helps make new blood cells.​
