Lived in coastal North Carolina
Went into hiding when she had children, but they were sent to NY
Escaped to the North to find her kids
Wrote her life story

Worked in a home
Was able to buy his freedom for a lot of money, but still struggled to actually live as a free man
Wrote his life story
Opened a school later in life

Worked in a home as a child
After the Civil War, she earned a scholarship to college
Had to struggle to attend because she was a woman, but finally did
Wrote a book about her life
Became the 4th Black woman in the COUNTRY to earn a doctorate degree!
