Inquiry: Trends in the Periodic Table (Basics)
By Patricia Drake
2
Multiple Choice
Look at the Bohr Models you drew across row 1 and then row 2
What happens to the # of electrons found on the outside energy level as you go from the left to the right?
Increase by 1
Decrease by 1
Stays the same
3
Outside Electrons = Valence Shell Electrons.
Write this in your notes!
These are HIGH ENERGY ELECTRONS
These are the only electrons INVOLVED IN BONDING
4
Multiple Choice
Look at the Bohr Models you drew in column 1 and 2
What happens to the # of VALENCE SHELL electrons an atom has as you move down a column?
Increases by 1
Decreases by 1
Stays the same
5
RECALL:
Copy the Valence Electron Trend across your tables
Atoms are grouped into FAMILIES/COLUMNS due to similarities!!
Make a note!
Helium = He only has 2 valence electrons
6
All atoms want to be STABLE = have a complete outer energy level that contains 8 electrons (except for Hydrogen and Helium who only need 2 valence electrons since they only have 1 energy level!)
Two ways atoms can become stable = obtain a full outer energy level that contains 8 electrons:
Lose electrons..and thus lose an outside energy level or
Gain electrons
To decide on what they atom will do, think about what will take less energy
7
Multiple Choice
Look at Li's Bohr Model and Dot Diagram.
What will Li do to become stable?
Gain 7 more electrons so it has 8 valence like Ne
Lose 1 valence electron so its inside shell with 2 valence electrons is exposed like He
8
Multiple Choice
Look at Na's Bohr Model and Dot Diagram.
What will Na do to become stable?
Gain 7 more electrons so it has 8 valence like Ar
Lose 1 valence electron so its inside shell with 8 valence electrons is exposed like N
9
Multiple Choice
Look at Be's Bohr Model and Dot Diagram.
What will Be do to become stable?
Gain 6 more electrons so it has 8 valence like Ne
Lose 2 valence electrons so its inside shell with 2 valence electrons is exposed like He
10
Multiple Choice
Look at Mg's Bohr Model and Dot Diagram.
What will Mg do to become stable?
Gain 6 more electrons so it has 8 valence like Ar
Lose 2 valence electrons so its inside shell with 8 valence electrons is exposed like Ne
11
Multiple Choice
Look at B's Bohr Model and Dot Diagram.
What will B do to become stable?
Gain 5 more electrons so it has 8 valence like Ne
Lose 3 valence electrons so its inside shell with 2 valence electrons is exposed like He
12
Multiple Choice
Look at Al's Bohr Model and Dot Diagram.
What will B do to become stable?
Gain 5 more electrons so it has 8 valence like Ar
Lose 3 valence electrons so its inside shell with 8 valence electrons is exposed like Ne
13
Multiple Choice
When atoms LOSE ELECTRONS, what charge will they become?
Postive
Negative
14
Multiple Choice
Look at C's Bohr model and lewis dot. What will C do to become stable?
Gain 4 electrons to have 8 total valence electrons like Ne
Lose 4 electrons so its inside shell is exposed with 2 valence electrons like He
Gain or Lose 4 electrons b/c either way it can look like a noble gas
15
Multiple Choice
Look at N's Bohr Model and Lewis Dot diagram. What will N do to become stable?
Gain 3 electrons so it has 8 total valence electrons like Ne
Lose 5 electrons so its inside shell is exposed with 2 valence electrons like He
16
Multiple Choice
Look at P's Bohr Model and Lewis Dot diagram. What will P do to become stable?
Gain 3 electrons so it has 8 total valence electrons like Ar
Lose 5 electrons so its inside shell is exposed with 8 valence electrons like Ne
17
Multiple Choice
Look at O's Bohr Model and Lewis Dot diagram. What will O do to become stable?
Gain 2 electrons so it has 8 total valence electrons like Ne
Lose 6 electrons so its inside shell is exposed with 2 valence electrons like He
18
Multiple Choice
Look at S's Bohr Model and Lewis Dot diagram. What will S do to become stable?
Gain 2 electrons so it has 8 total valence electrons like Ar
Lose 6 electrons so its inside shell is exposed with 8 valence electrons like Ne
19
Multiple Choice
Look at F's Bohr Model and Lewis Dot diagram. What will F do to become stable?
Gain 1 electrons so it has 8 total valence electrons like Ne
Lose 7 electrons so its inside shell is exposed with 2 valence electrons like He
20
Multiple Choice
Look at Cl's Bohr Model and Lewis Dot diagram. What will Cl do to become stable?
Gain 1 electrons so it has 8 total valence electrons like Ar
Lose 7 electrons so its inside shell is exposed with 8 valence electrons like Ne
21
Multiple Choice
What charge do atoms become when the GAIN electrons?
Postive
Negative
22
Charges = Oxidation #s
Fill in oxidation #s across your periodic table
Also, make sure you make a note on what the atom is doing - gaining or losing electrons
