Location

Frigid Zone is a zone lying between the Arctic Circle (661\2 N) and the North Pole (90N) in the Northern Hemisphere and the Antarctic Circle (661\2 S) and the South Pole (90 S) in the Southern Hemisphere and these zones are freezing.

Climate

The climate of the frigid zone is: The frigid is cold throughout the year. In winters the temperature may drop down to – 40°C. There is continuous darkness for 6 months in winters.this is because here the sun does not rise much above the horizon. Therefore, its rays are always slanting and provide less heat. These are, therefore, called Frigid Zones (very cold). The coldest areas of the World are the frigid zones, normally coated in ice and snow.

Plant Life

There is a wide source of vegetation in the polar region but there are few species in common in the southern and northern polar regions. The Arctic consists of desert and tundra vegetations. The desert vegetation consists of algae, lichens, and mosses. Lichens are the most dominant plants.Typical flora found on tundra include lichens, mosses, and shrubs that grow close to the ground, and up to a few centimeters high. Yet in the Arctic, “trees” and even whole “forests” can be found - dwarf trees like the Arctic (rock) willow. The plants in frigid zone are- mosses, lichens, grasses, flower bearing plants and berry bearing shrubs.

Wild Life

The frigid zone of the northern hemisphere has both land and sea animals as well as many insects. ii. Polar bears , reindeer, seals, hares, Arctic fox and the ground squirrel are some animals that live here. They have to keep high body temperatures to remain active. These animals are known as endotherms (endo-inside + therm-heat) as they generate their heat internally. The polar regions' cold and wind mean that this heat can very quickly be lost leading to hypothermia (hypo-under).Musk ox, reindeer and caribou all live in the Arctic. Arctic people herd reindeer and depend on them for food, clothing, and shelter, however, caribou have never been domesticated. Musk ox are one of the largest mammals found in the Arctic.

Human Life

Northern people found many different ways to adapt to the harsh Arctic climate, developing warm dwellings and clothing to protect them from frigid weather. They also learned how to predict the weather and navigate in boats and on sea iceliving conditions in the polar regions are harsh: very low temperatures, violently strong winds, ground often frozen solid, alternation between long nights in winter and long days in summer and difficult access by any means of transportation.
