Objective 1.02

2

How does creativity and innovation influence design?

Design components

  1. Creativity- to turn new ideas into reality

    1. Define need- What are you trying to accomplish?

    2. Generate ideas- What are some solutions to fix it?

  2. Innovation- to do something in a new way or develop new methods and thinking of the way something is accomplished

    1. Original solutions

    2. Transform existing solutions

4

What is step #1 involved in Design Thinking?

Empathize

 a.   Interview- the work you do to understand people within the context of your design challenge.

  b.   Dig deeper- uncover the problem that needs to be addressed by watching, listening and discovering insights that give YOU the direction to create innovative solutions.

5

What is step #2 involved in Design Thinking?

Define-all about bringing clarity and focus into the design discussion & making sense of the widespread information you gathered in the Empathize mode.

a.   Needs and insights-narrowing down the focused problem to create a meaningful and actionable problem statement (also known as point of view).

b.   Establish a point of view-synthesize scattered findings into powerful insights.

6

What is step #3 involved in Design Thinking?

Ideate- the process of coming up with a number of broad ideas.

a.   Sketch ideas- draw possible solutions

b.   Receive feedback- discuss opinions on the solutions

c.   Reflect and revise- deferring judgement; separating the generation of ideas from the evaluation of ideas.

7

What are steps #4 and #5 involved in Design Thinking?

4. Prototype- scaled down model of your solution

5. Test- running diagnostics to see if the prototype worked

15

Factors that impact interior design

Human Centered

Social Factors

Global Impact

Environmental Factors

16

What factors impact design?

Human Centered Factors

  1. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs- American Psychologist Abraham Maslow theorized that all humans have specific needs to achieve their highest potential.  These needs begin with the most basic of needs- shelter, food, water, clothing, sleep and have to be met before they can move on to the next rung of needs.  Most, if not all of the needs, have to met before you can start to realize the next level of needs.

  2. Anthropometrics- The study of measurements of the human body compared to surrounding space. Information can be helpful in space planning, furniture arrangement, and universal design.

  3. Proxemics- The study of human comfort in relationship to people and their interpersonal space.   The number of people, the task at hand, and the feelings of the people involved determines the size of the “space bubble” required.

  4. Ergonomics- The study of human engineering.  Human measurements and body positions are used to create an efficient working space to decrease fatigue and discomfort and to increase work output.

  5. Universal Design- Building spaces for use by anyone regardless of handicap

17

What are the factor that impact interior design?

Social factors

  1. Culture

    1. Traditions- Culture may play a huge part in decisions a person makes. For instance, someone with an Asian background may make use of Feng Shui when looking at a house or the use of a space.

    2. Religion- EX: A Muslim might have the need face a certain way for prayer and an area to pray.

18

What Factors Impact Interior Design?

Global impact factors

  1. Sourcing- sending part(s) of all of a project out to have someone else to f

  2. Channels of distribution- several channels of distribution and each has an impact on the clients budget.  The more channels a product goes through the more costly the product becomes.

  3. Innovations

19

What are the factors that impact interior design?

Environmental factors

  1. Aspects of “Green” design

  2. LEED-Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

    1. Sustainability

Ethics with design and environment- The closer a product is to the building site or end user the less energy it requires.  Paints being made now are low to no VOC’s which means Volatile Organic Compounds.  These chemicals have an odor which impacts the air quality. With so many people suffering from allergies, it is important to read labels for substances used in the product that can affect their allergies

20

1

Rules and regulations in place to help the community and it's safety as well as the safety of the occupants of the space.

2

Seeks to promote the safety of consumer products by addressing "unreasonable risks" of injury

A green building certification program used worldwide.

29

What pre-design activities are essential?

Pre-design activities (essential before moving a project forward)

  1. Identify client problem and scope of project- meet with the client to find out their needs, wants, scope of project and budget.  The designer will then decide if the job is beneficial for both client and designer and if the designer can meet all of the needs of the client in the allotted timeframe.

  2. Contractual agreement

30

What are the essential considerations in the programming phase of the interior design process?

Discovery (client information gathering)

  1. Lifestyle- family type and stage

  2. Family Life Cycle

    1. Single Adult- not married, no children

    2. Newlywed- newly married with no children

    3. Parenting- couple with children birth-20 years old

    4. Launching- couple with children leaving home

    5. Empty Nest- couple with children leaving home

    6. Retirement- couple from retirement until...

31

What are the essential considerations in the programming phase of the interior design process?

Function of spaces (zones)

  1. Private space- sleeping, studying, relaxing, conducting business

  2. Public/social space- recreation, conversation, dining, entertainment

  3. Work/service space- preparing food, laundry/cleaning and storage needed

  4. Home needs analysis

32

What are the essential considerations in the programming phase of the interior design process?

Design preferences/styles

  1. Traditional- uses lots of stained woods, traditional lines on furniture like wing-back chairs and queen-anne style furniture.  Iron furniture, and wicker.  Think of this style like you are in a museum.  You usually see wood floors, historical colors on the walls and could even see antique furniture or reproductions of antiques.  Fabrics like tapestries, laces, plaids, brocades chintz, moire’, just to name a few, Oriental rugs cover dark stained wood floors.

  2. Contemporary- sleek clean lines, slick finishes, leathers and unusual furniture styles.  Technology drives this design style.  Primary colors used are whites, blacks and greys but usually always has an accent color to add interest.  Kitchen cabinets are usually slick shiny finishes with polished metals.  Glass top tables mixed with metals.  Think of New York or innovative design.  Some people think of this style as cold.  Usually young professionals are attracted to this style because it is something they might have in the office setting. Concrete flooring or countertops would be found in this style as well but it would be highly polished.

33

What are the essential considerations in the programming phase of the interior design process?

Eclectic- lots of different colors as if the person has been all over the world and collected something from everywhere and stuck it in a room.  It is like a collection of lots of things.  It is also known as the bohemian style/gypsy style.

Transitional- known as casual elegance.  It has traditional lines and styles of furniture but has been tweaked to make it more funky or modern. There is always a mixture of textures and stains with paints.  Accessories will be a mixture of traditional elements and contemporary elements.  Think funky and elegant.  Golds and other metals are mixed with polished and matte finishes.

34

What are the essential considerations in the programming phase of the interior design process?

Cottage- defined by the rustic finishes, furniture and worn comfy elements.  This style is simple items along with natural elements.  Whitewashed, grey washed or natural woods on floors, furniture table tops. Mixture of patterns small and large.  Lots of whites, off whites and lighter colors intertwined with natural elements.  Paint finishes are sanded to look worn or aged.  Casual feeling.

  1. Other- There are lots of different interior design styles (EX: rustic, zen, hacienda, steampunk, coastal, postmodern, etc.)
