Sound Vocabulary Lesson
2
What is sound?
Well, I know it is the opposite of quiet.
Does it have anything to do with noise?
I know my teacher says they don't want to hear a sound...
3
Poll
What is sound?
to move quickly back and forth
energy created by waves from vibrations of matter
annoying country music
a very bright light that shines through a prism
4
Sound
energy created by waves from vibrations of matter, how high or low a sound is (the greater the frequency - vibrations per second - the higher the pitch)
5
Vibrations
Do you have good vibrations?
When you vibe well with someone it means that you are both creating similar emotion/thought vibrations
Now let's think about science.
What does vibration mean in science?
6
Poll
What does vibrations mean?
perfect stillness
all the good energy
the act of moving quickly back and forth
the strength or loudness of a sound wave
7
Vibrations are...
the act of moving quickly back and forth
8
Absorb
What happens when a sponge soaks everything up?
Do you soak up all the knowledge I give you?
What happens when you go out in a torrential downpour?
Yep.
Soaked.
Did you absorb it?
9
Poll
Which one defines absorb?
take in
to shine light on
what sound travels through
Area with no matter
10
absorb
take in
that's it - this is a simple one!
11
Transmit
Hmmm... This makes me think of E.T. when he was trying to phone home. He needed to transmit a signal.
12
Poll
What does transmit mean?
take in
to transform into another thing
make it all the way
go through
13
So, transmit means...
go through
E.T. wanted his signal to go through to his home.
14
Volume.
Here are some definitions of volume:
a book forming part of a work or series
the amount of space that a substance or object occupies
Those aren't what we need!!
This isn't reading or math, it is SCIENCE!!
15
Poll
Define volume (for our unit of SOUND in science).
the strength or loudness of a sound wave -- measured in decibels
a book forming part of a work or series
the amount of space that a substance or object occupies
what sound travels through
16
Volume:
the strength or loudness of a sound wave -- measured in decibels
How we hear amplitude! How loud or soft a sound is.
17
What is a sound wave?
How do sounds get to us?
What do you think?
18
Poll
What is a sound wave?
when you yell loudly while waving to your friend
the loud crashing waves at the beach
to move quickly back and forth
Energy from a vibration that travels in series of compressions (like waves)
19
Sound Wave
Energy from a vibration that travels in series of compressions (like waves)
20
What do you think of with the term medium?
That's what size I wear!
Something that is in a middle position?
Someone who can speak to the dead?
Nope! This is another definition!
21
Poll
Which one do you think is the definition for medium?
what sound travels through (solid, liquid or gas)
not too big, not too small
how high or low a sound is
to move quickly back and forth
22
23
What is a vacuum?
Not the thing to clean the floor
Not the brother who eats all the food at dinner
But, it does have something to do with being empty
Think about what vacuums do, and what the brother does when he eats all the food. The vacuums take all the dirt and things out of the carpet. And the brother devours everything, leaving nothing.
24
Poll
Which one defines vacuum for our sound unit?
area with no matter (sound cannot travel through)
area with lots of particles in the air
how high or low a sound is
what sound travels through
25
vacuum
area with no matter (sound cannot travel through)
26
pitch
Not when the pitcher throws the ball
Not like the pitch of a roof
Not like the pitch that is the turf on a football field.
This one is has to do with sound. Did you ever talk about pitch in music class?
27
Poll
Which one defines pitch, as we use it in our sound unit?
when you throw the ball right into the strike zone
the strength or loudness of a sound wave -- measured in decibels
Energy from a vibration that travels in series of compressions (like waves)
how high or low a sound is (the greater the frequency - vibrations per second - the higher the pitch)
