Revolutionary Tea

There was an old lady lived over the sea

And she was an island queen.

Her daughter lived off in a new country

With an ocean of water between

The old lady’s pockets were full of gold

But never contented was she,

So she called on her daughter to pay her a tax

Of three pence a pound on her tea,

Of three pence a pound on her tea.

American colonists refused to buy goods from Britain because of the Townshend taxes. The Townshend Acts were a series of taxes on British goods, such as tea. Tea was the most popular drink in the North American colonies. As British merchants lost more and more money because of the success of the colonial boycotts, Britain eventually gave in. They removed all of the Townshend taxes except the tax on tea. By keeping the tax on tea, Britain was telling the colonists that they still had the right to place taxes on goods shipped to America. American colonial leaders were not satisfied. They believed that laws should not be made without their approval. In other words, they felt that Britain had no right to pass laws, especially tax laws, since they had no representation in Parliament.

According to the text, why was there tension between Britain and the colonies over tea?

11

On December 16, 1773, Samuel Adams, a leader of the Boston Sons of Liberty, organized a group of men to take action. They disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians and boarded the Dartmouth. They worked through the night with axes smashing 342 crates of tea and dumped them into Boston harbor. The Sons of Liberty, although they dressed as Indians, wanted everyone to know that they were responsible for dumping the tea in the harbor. The disguises were worn just to make sure that the British authorities in Boston would not be able to identify individuals and arrest them for destroying the tea. The British were furious! In 1774, Parliament passed more laws to punish Boston. Colonists called these acts “intolerable” and called on all the colonies to organize against British rule.
