​What is HTTP?

​HTTP, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is the language that computers use to access documents on the World Wide Web.

​History

HTTP ​was initiated by Tim Berners-Lee, and version 1.1 of HTTP/1 was first documented in 1997. HTTP/1 was an upgraded version of HTTP and is connected with the modern version. The current version is HTTP/2.

​Request Methods

​HTTP uses an assortment of requests to indicate the desired outcome. The most popular request is the GET request. The other tasks that HTTP can perform are HEAD, POST, PUT, DELETE, CONNECT, OPTIONS, TRACE, and PATCH.

Servers, which can be thousands of miles away, hold the code for HTTP. Larger files are broken down into smaller bits called packets.

​HTTPS

​HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Safe. HTTPS is a secure version of HTTP. HTTPS prevents hackers from snooping or tampering. HTTPS is active if you see a lock next to your browser address bar. The protocols that protect your browsing are called SSL (Secure Socket Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security).
