Associative Property
of multiplication and addition
2
What is the associative property?
When you have three or more factors, you can group them in different ways to multiply or add in parts and still get the same product.
Ex: 2 x (3 x 4) = (2 x 3) x 4 Ex: 5 + (6 + 7) = ( 5 + 6) + 7
2 x 12 = 6 x 4 5 + 13 = 11+7
24 = 24 18 = 18
3
Multiple Choice
When looking at the associative property we should focus on...
where the parentheses are
the order of the factors
how the factors are grouped
All of the above
4
Let's do one together!
4 x (1 x 5) = ___________
5
4 x (1 x 5) = (4 x 1) x 5
4 x 5 = 4 x 5
6
Multiple Choice
Which one is the associative property to:
(8 x 2) x 4
4 x 2 x 8
(4 x 2) x 8
8 x (2 x 4)
(8 x 2) x4
7
Multiple Choice
Which one is the associative property to:
6 + (3 + 2)
(6 + 2) + 3
(6 + 3) + 2
6 + (2 + 3)
6 + (3 2)

Look at the factors, group them in a different way, multiply in parts and find the product for: (4 x 2) x 5 = ________
Step 1: (4 x 2) x 5 = 4 x (2 x 5)
Step 2: 8 x 5 = 4 x10
Step 3: 40 = 40

Open Ended
Look at the factors, group them in a different way, multiply in parts and find the product for (2 x 8) x 1 = _________
13
Open Ended
Look at the factors, group them in a different way, add in parts and find the sum for (2 + 1) + 3 = ______
14
Multiple Choice
Can you use the associative property with subtraction?
(in other words, does the order matter?)
yes the order matters because
(3-2)-1 = 3-(2-1)
no the order doesn't matters because
(3-2)-1 = 3-(2-1)
15
Multiple Choice
Can you use the associative property with division?
(in other words, does the order matter?)
yes the order matters because
(40÷10)÷5=40÷(10÷5)
no the order doesn't matters because
(40÷10)÷5=40÷(10÷5)
