Geographers use five different themes of ways of thinking. These themes are: Location, Place, Region, Movement and Human-environment interaction. These themes can help to Geographers to answer on two basic questions in Geography - Where are things located and why are they there?

- Location
Geographers begin to study a place by finding where it is, or its location. There are two different locations differentiated with Geographers.
A) Absolute location describes a place's exact position on Earth in terms of Latitude and Longitude.
B) Relative location or the location of a place relative to another place.

- Place
Geographers describe the place by describing Physical and Human characteristics. For example, you might talk about how many people live in a particular area and the kinds of work they do. You can mention that the place is hilly or it is flat.

- Region
Geographers use the theme of region to group places that have something in common. A region is an area with similar physical and human characteristics.
Example:
Middle East region
Physical characteristics: Desert area, sparse vegetation, hot and dry, low rainfall, no rivers
Human characteristics: Muslims, Arabic language, similar dress code, similar food.

- Movement
The theme of movement explores how people, good and ideas move from one place to another.

How people, goods, and ideas are moving every day? What do you think is the fastest in traveling and why?

- Human - environment interaction
This theme is explaining how people are interacting with their environment. People can affect environment in a positive or in a negative way.
River dam construction is interaction between people and environment. Having a National park is one way of positive interaction between people and environment but pollution of environment is a negative interaction.
