1. Definition
Migration is the movement of people into or out of a specific Geographic area for the purpose of taking up a permanent or semi-permanent residence.
It is a third component of population change.
Migration can increase or decrease the number of people in a specific Geographic area depending on how many people are coming or leaving that area.
5
We differentiate between:
Migrant - a person that is moving
Emigrant - a person that is leaving one territory
Immigrant - a person that is coming to one territory

What is the difference between Immigrant and Emigrant?
7
There are many factors why people are migrating but we can classify them into two groups:
1. Push factors
2. Pull factors
1. Push factors are reasons for emigrating (leaving a place) such as: food shortage, natural disaster, a war, bad healthcare...
2. Pull factors are reasons for immigration (moving into place) such as: freedom, better food supply, better climate, better education, healthcare...

What type of migration factor is this?
10
Types of migrations are:
1. Internal migrations are moving to a new place within a country (example: moving from village to the city area)
11
2. International migrations are moving from one place to a different country. This movement of people is happening everyday on a large scale from developing into developed countries or even from developed to developed countries. There are many reasons why people are moving from one country to another or from one continent to another.
12
3. Forced migrations (involuntary)
Forced displacement is an involuntary movement of a person or people away from their home or home region. This means that people don't have a choice so they have to move. Reasons for Forced migrations are:
1. War
2. Natural disasters (Earthquake, Drought, Tsunami...)
3. Ethnic discrimination
4. Hunger
13
4. Voluntary migrations
Voluntary migration is migration based on one's free will and initiative. People move for a variety of reasons, and it involves weighing options and choices.
Reasons for voluntary migrations are:
1. Better education
2. Better healthcare
3. Better climate
4. More jobs
5. Better salaries
14
Refugee
a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.
