What is a Suffix? ​

​An Overview....

​A suffix is one or more letters added to the end of a word.

​

​Sometimes, adding a suffix to a word makes a new word or changes the part of speech

​

​Adding a suffix to a word for Skill #1, you must double the ending consonant before adding the suffix THE EXCEPTION: words that end in X

​

​Phonetic Skills #1 words that end in a Digraph already have two consonants after the vowel so just add the suffix. EXAMPLE- Wish, Wished

You know how to add a suffix to the end of words already!

​Adding -s or -es

​Now we will review how to add suffixes like -ing, -ed, -er, -es or -est to words that follow skills 1 & 2.

​

​Other suffixes are -able, -ful, and -less. This will be reviewed later.

​

​Suffixes -ed and -ing are applied most often to verbs.
